How To Make New Friends In College

You're new to the school and have not seen one familiar face yet. It can be frustrating when entering college and having to start all over with friends.  I remember when I first started school, I instantly thought my roommates would be my friends, but that didn't happen. In fact, my roommates had their own lives and friends. I still enjoyed them as roommates though. Below are some tips that  helped me gain friends, and will probably do the same for you.

Think Positive:

You may not gain a friend overnight, but that's okay. Just remember you will meet plenty of people, but that doesn't mean they're your friend throughout the semester.  Continue to smile, and even though it doesn't seem like it, you're not alone with meeting people.

Join a Sorority or Fraternity:

You won't believe how many people only join a Greek organization to meet friends. I think there are better ways to meet friends, but if you want to join a Sorority or Fraternity to meet friends, then go ahead. It is a great way for you to network and do different activities.

In Class:

The majority of the friends I've met in college were in class. Hint- Hint Go to class. Joke about how lame the
professor's jokes are to someone. If you're not that bold,  asking a question about a test can help you develop a friendship.

Be Bold:

Once you've met someone that seems nice, ask them to join you for lunch. This may be the icebreaker of the awkwardness you may feel when you first meet someone. If you find yourself lost in a conversation, try talking about a TV show, movie, or music. I'm sure the person will have an opinion about it.

Go To Meetings:

Every college will have different organizations you can join.  Go to the meetings and see if you'll like it.  Of course, go to a meeting that you're interested in and you may meet some amazing people there.

Sports:

My first year in college I started off with no friends. Around October, I did something that even today I can't believe I've done. I went to the school's football game by myself. I felt completely lost, but I managed to meet some people from my physiology class. Go to a sports game, even if you're not a big sports fan. You truly don't know who you may meet there.

Now we want to hear from you! How did you make friends in college? Do you have any advice you want us to share?

  1. I didn't have any either luckily my roomate knew a lot of people and I tagged along with her then I started doing a lot of teamwork stuff in class and that's how I got to know most of my friends who are now life long friends.

  2. I met a few friends in college thanks to group projects. After the awkward introductions, I realized we had a lot in common. I also met some cool people through the Big Bang concert. I only knew one of the four girls who went but spending a days with people makes you buddy up pretty quick.
