Lucky Us Book Review + Giveaway

4:00 PM

I received this book for promotional purposes from Random House. All opinions are mine.

We were given an advanced copy of Amy Bloom's Lucky Us thanks to 20 something bloggers and Random House. I was getting really excited to read this book, since I had seen featured in a magazine I love. Plus, i haven't read a periodical fiction story in a while.

Lucky Us follows Eva, a shy bookish girl, and her half-sister Iris, a talented star on the rise, as they move from the bland lands of Ohio to star studded Hollywood, New York and more in the 1920s.  I was expecting this book to be about all about their glitzy, and glamorous life based on the description, but I was thankfully wrong. Things seem to be going well for Iris in Hollywood but overnight things quickly take a turn in the opposite direction sending on brand new adventures with new friends, loves, and more surprises. I liked seeing Eva develop throughout the book and her Relationships with the people around her. Reading this and her love for her friends and role with her family really made me sympathize with her- a girl who seems to be overlooked by everyone in her world. It also reminds me that sometimes the ones that love you the most may not always even be your family.

One of the annoying features of this book is the switching narrative. Eva's is the main voice of the story, but it changes between her and the other characters as the story goes on. It is not always immediately clear who the story is following or when the story is taking place when this happens, although the letters that are featured in the story thankfully include a date.

Overall, Lucky Us is a good book that would be a great addition to your book shelf (and even a summer reading list). You can read more about Amy Bloom and her work by visiting her website or following her on Twitter.

Lucky Us will be released July 29th and you'll be able to travel along with Evaown. Until then, one lucky reader will get their own copy of Lucky Us thanks to Random House. The entries for this giveaway will be shorter than the last one. Good luck everyone!
