Divergent Is Better Than I Expected

2:30 PM

When I first saw the trailer for Divergent, I was not impressed. The trailer did not appeal to me because it left me confused about the general plot of the movie. It appeared similar to The Hunger Games, and I was not interested in watching a copycat movie. After scanning through the plot of Divergent on Wikipedia (I know it wasn't the best site), I decided to give  Divergent a chance.
PLOT

Divergent takes place in a futuristic society, and the main character Beatrice "Tris", played by Shailene Woodley, is preparing for the aptitude test. The aptitude test is to determine which faction she belongs in. There are five factions:  Abnegation (selfless), Amity (peaceful), Candor (truthful), Erudite (intelligent) and Dauntless (brave). Currently, Beatrice is in Abnegation, but she wants to be apart of Dauntless because she admires their carefree behavior. After she takes the test, she is told that she is Divergent, which means she does not fit into either of the five factions.

She was warned not to tell anyone, because Divergents are a threat to the society. Although she is a Divergent, she along with the others who've taken the aptitude tests, are given the freewill to choose a faction  to be apart of during the Choosing Ceremony. Instead of choosing her home faction Abnegation the, she chooses Dauntless. Since she chose a faction that was not apart of her family the rules states that she is not allowed to see her family again. "Faction over blood."

Now that she is apart of Dauntless, she is trained in two stages physical and mental abilities. She later  learns that Divergents are being targeted for killed and fears she'll be discovered.

REVIEW

The movie was nothing like Hunger Games. The only thing the two movies have in common are the extreme close ups on the characters' faces and both take place in a futuristic society. I'm  actually liking Divergent more than The Hunger Games, which is a huge surprise, because I really thought I would hate it. Don't get confused, I still like Hunger Games, I just prefer the first movie more than Catching Fire.

I really thought there would be a cheesy love story, similar to The Hunger Games, but it wasn't cheesing. I actually like Tris and Four, played by Theo James, together.

*Sidenote* In one scene, Tirs asks Four what his back tattoo is and he asked her if she wanted to see it. All the women in the theater screamed "YES" as he took off his shirt to show her. It was so funny to hear the audience's reaction.

SHOULD YOU SEE THE MOVIE?

My vote is YES! Go and spend $10 to see it. It is worth the hype that is receiving. The movie will leave your emotions in a jumble and keep you wondering what will happen to each character. It has action and a little romance, heck I even cried in one scene.
