Where the Hell Do I Get Experience?!?

1:50 PM

"I'm sorry, but you do not have enough experience for this position ." This sentence is probably the most frustrating thing to hear while job searching -especially for current college students or recent  grads looking for a job. How are we supposed to get a job if you need experience, but can't get any experience because we're too inexperienced to hire? It's a frustrating paradox many of us have and will encounter during the job search. That's why I've found a few leads on to get you that coveted experience.

Rework your résumé

You may actually have the experience you need, but may not have worded it correctly on your résumé.  Instead of saying you worked the cashier at your retail job,  elaborate to show the leadership, management, and customer service skills you exhibited during the job. If you're a little stuck on how to write it all out, take a look at the job description of your current/past position to help you with the wording.

Go for Another Position

You may not qualify for the position you want, but is there another one in the company that you can take up that will give that experience? Or another that will put the skills you possess to good use? Check the company's openings to see what other positions are available that fit closer to the skills you currently possess. If you're hired on, you can ask to receive training in that area in the future.

Internships

An internship in your field will equip you with the necessary hands on experience and references you'll need to jump start your career. Sites such as Indeed and Internships.com are great resources to search for internships in numerous fields. Hopefully you're able to find a paid internship, but if not, the knowledge and hands on experience you receive will help you in your future job search regardless.

Volunteering

There are more ways to volunteer than just prepping meals at the soup kitchen. Offer your skills to an organization or charity you support. Does your church need help editing sermon videos? Does the Humane Society need graphics for an upcoming campaign? Could your accounting skills help your favorite non-profit? If you don't know of an organization in need of assistance, do a little investigating online or within your community.  Don't be afraid to send cold emails or Facebook messages to companies that interest you.

Freelancing

Offer your work online through sites like fiver, thumbtack, and upwork. You'll be working on projects to add to your resume and getting paid in the process.

Self Employment

Sometimes working for yourself is the best way to go -especially if you're looking to gain real world experience, but not getting hired. Maybe this is the time to start your own business. There are multiple resources available online and in stores that will help you start the business you've always wanted. Whether you're looking to becoming a graphic designer, accountant, or translator, there are multiples ways to get your business off the ground. Creating your own business, handling clients, and doing a successful job will demonstrate your leadership ability and drive which is sure to impress future employers.
