My road to becoming a K-Pop (Korean Pop music) fan has been a long journey. If you would have told me 4 years ago that I would love K-pop music I would have laughed in disbelief.
I did have friends that listened to K-pop and J-Pop (Japanese Pop) music, which I thought was weird. I just couldn't wrap my head around the idea of listening to music not spoken in my native language. One day, a classmate from Thailand told me about a Thai artist named Punch. I thought about given it a try, because it wasn't K-pop, and I thought Thai music would be different. The song was a sad love song. The video was heartbreaking. In the video Punch's boyfriend cheats on her with her co- worker. I wish I could find the English translation of the video, but I can't. Maybe you will like it as much as I did.
I listened to Punch's song almost everyday. Even though I did not have a clue what she was singing, the music helped me understand her sorrow. One day I saw a thumbnail suggestion on Youtube. The thumbnail had a picture of two girls who appeared to be singers. I was excited to listen to more Thai music so I clicked it. The song started slow, but then a techno beat came in during the chorus. The girls sung, "Give me a call, baby baby." The girls singing the song, if you haven't guessed, was k-pop group Davichi, and the song was "8282." I don't know why I liked the song, but it just happen.
After listening to Davichi's song over and over again, I found another K-pop song that I became obsessed with. To this day, I list After School song "Because of You" as one of my favorite k-pop song. The song just never gets old.
I think part of the reason I became a K-pop fan was because the English translation helped me understand the song and enjoy the music even more. The music videos help as well. I would later discover other great K-pop groups such as 2ne1 and Miss A. Who would have thought that a Thai song would have led me to become a K-pop fan?
If you're a K-pop fan or listen to it occasionally comment on your discovery of K-pop music.
Haha! This was a great post! I, myself, am not a kpop fan, but most of my friends from high school are, so I was around it a lot. When Wonder Girls became big with "Nobody but You," that's when I saw kpop becoming more mainstream in the U.S. I mean there's PSY too, but I don't really count him.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kriselle for the comment. We both were surrounding around k-pop fans in high school. I cave into my friends obsession with it, slowly but surely.
